American Family Mutual Insurance Company Chief Operating OfficerJack Salzwedel will become the Madison, Wisc.-based insurer'schairman and chief executive late this year.

The promotion will become effective Nov. 1, according to thecompany.

Mr. Salzwedel, who began with American Family in 1983 as ahealth claim adjuster, will succeed Dave Anderson, who is retiringeffective Oct. 31 after 36 years with the company.

Mr. Salzwedel has been COO since 2006 and president sinceJanuary 2007. He is credited with starting a technologytransformation and creating customer service options during histime as president of the company.

Two year after his start in 1983, Mr. Salzwedel became an agent,a district sales manager, and state sales director for easternWisconsin. In 2000 he became vice president of personal lines andthen was named vice president of American Family's life insurancecompany in 2003. Then Mr. Salzwedel became executive vice presidentin 2004, with oversight of the company's regional sales operations,marketing, and broker/dealer divisions.

American Family said it is reviewing its executive structurebefore naming who will take over as president and COO once Mr.Salzwedel assumes his new roles.
