TransCare Corp., a medical transportation company serving the mid-Atlantic, has seen dramatic improvements in workers' compensation claims closures since implementing an intake/triage program in July 2010. A startling 93 percent of its medical-only claims occurring in that month closed within 30 days, compared to only five percent closing in July 2009.
"We operate in a fast-paced environment, and our employees receive immediate treatment after an injury," said Steve Miller, TransCare's risk manager. "But in the past, we were frustrated by the long lag time before the first doctor's appointment. This slowed down the whole process; claimants weren't getting in to see doctors as fast as they should and it took a long time to release them to work."
Its new third-party administrator, Emerald Claims Management, streamlined the process by working with CompPartners to develop a 24/7 triage-intake system. "The first 24 to 48 hours post injury are critical in terms of managing the medical, confirming coverage and handling the different aspects of taking on a claim," said Jamie Davis, ARM, Emerald's director of claims.
