The National Insurance Crime Bureau released its third quarter2010 questionable claims (QC) referral reason analysis and reportsa 12 percent increase.

The report examines six referral reason categories ofclaims–property, casualty, commercial, workers' compensation,vehicle and miscellaneous. Through the third quarter of 2010, NICBreceived 70,295 QC referrals from its member insurance companiescompared with 62,929 received in the same period of 2009–a 12percent increase.

In the third quarter, there were 1,700 more referrals forsuspected auto glass fraud, an increase of 511 percent, whencompared with third-quarter figures for 2009. Inflated towing andstorage bills also increased significantly. NICB president and CEOJoe Wehrle speculates that states with “no fault” insurance, suchas Florida and New York, offer little resistance to criminals.
