The project highlights the variation in the effectiveness of different insurers' claim management practices especially when dealing with back strains and sprains.
The results show a 22 percent difference in the expected recovery rates between the best and the worst performer.
The challenge with muscular skeletal claims (back sprains and other soft tissue injuries) is that there is little physical evidence to verify the severity of the injury. There is risk of pain killer addiction, and the potential need for expensive surgery. Also, such claims are more open to abuse or even fraud.
