The Florida Surplus lines Association (FSLA) celebrated its 50th anniversary during its annual convention at Amelia Island Plantation July 22-24. Surplus lines brokerage firms, agents, insurance companies and industry-related firms made up the largest crowd in our group's history.

The convention began with a reception for first-time attendees hosted by the FSLA board of directors. This was followed by a reception for all attendees and an open house in the president's suite hosted by FSLA President Bruce Bowers and his wife, Donna. The opening business session was held the following morning. Douglas A. Mang, longtime FSLA general council, brought the membership up to date on legislative activities and other matters that affect our industry.

Attendees also heard from two speakers of international reputation. Hank Watkins, president of Lloyd's North America, discussed Lloyd's operations in the U.S. and Canada and the global marketplace. William Berkley, chairman and CEO of W.R. Berkley, Inc., gave a wide-ranging talk on the current and future issues facing the surplus lines industry.
