Insured losses for the U.S. in June totaled about $200 million because of hail and flooding in the Northern Plains and tornado damage in the Midwest and Ohio Valley, Aon Benfield said.
A report by the analytics firm said flooding and hail in parts of Texas, Nebraska, and Iowa produced 25,000 claims totaling $100 million. Tornadoes and other severe weather in Iowa, Illinois, Michigan and Indiana spawned 20,000 claims and another $100 million in losses.
Economic damages and insured losses are largely unknown for flooding events in Texas, Arkansas, and Oklahoma during the middle of June and other severe weather in the Midwest, Northern Plains, and Northeast at the end of the month. Aon Benfield noted that widespread damage was reported from the Plains to the Ohio Valley due to storms on June 21, as tornadoes and high winds were recorded during severe weather late in the month.
