The National Insurance Producer Registry and the Assn. for Cooperative OperationsResearch and Development has signed an agreement to harmonizespecific NIPR processes with existing ACORD messaging library dataand message definitions in a move toward improving the producerlicensing and appointment processes.

NIPR's gateway between the insurance industry and stateinsurance regulators supports compliance activities such aslicensing, appointments and state review. The current gatewaymessages fully support both request and response, including errorprocessing for both life and non-life business.

ACORD and NIPR plan to streamline the overall process by mappingapproximately 9 proprietary NIPR transactions to the ACORDmessaging library, a cross-domain messaging standard.

"The benefit for the insurance industry will be that producerscan create NIPR transactions out of the same message elements theyare using today to communicate with each other," Maryellen Waggonersaid, executive director of NIPR.

ACORD has automated producer licensing and appointment processeswithin its standards for the benefit of producers, insurers andsolutions providers. Working with NIPR they will develop standardsfor the exchange of information with state insurance regulators aswell.

To implement the partnership, ACORD will form a working groupconsisting of its members and representatives from the NIPR. Thegroup will document the used cases related to the transactions, mapthe transactions and analyze the implementation of the messages. Inthe end, industry participants can implement the actual ACORDmessages in a business environment to streamline theprocess.
