The Florida Legislature passed a bill on May 1 thatbans "crash taxes." The bill, SB 2282, addresses a recent butgrowing trend in Florida municipalities and counties seekingadditional revenue to charge those involved in auto accidents andtheir insurers for the cost of local fire adn police emergencyresponse services.

In Florida, approximately two dozen local governments havepassed such ordinances in the past two years, and charge policeresponse fees ranging from $180-200 to $800 for fire responseservices, according to a 2008 study by the Florida Senate.
