Over the past year, no single issue relating to employment practices liability insurance has garnered more attention than coverage for wage-and-hour law violations.

Such cases may be filed for a wide array of alleged violations of federal and state statues relating to issues such as minimum wage, overtime pay, meal and rest breaks, tips, bonuses, and a number of other issues. The most well-known statute is the federal Fair Labor Standards Act (FSLA).

This new awareness is due in part to the marked increase in the number of wage-and-hour lawsuits in recent years. In fact, there were more wage-and-hour class actions filed in 2007 than federal securities class actions. (See related text box, "How Many Are Being Filed?")
