The economic downturn means charities across the country are expected to receive declining contributions this holiday season.
To prevent this, Yahoo and more than 60,000 nonprofits have partnered with www.goodsearch.com, a search engine, and www.goodshop.com, an online shopping mall, to enable supports to generate donations by searching the Internet and shopping online.
GoodShop offers more than 700 top retailers, including Target, Apple, Macy's, Best Buy, Barnes & Noble and Orbitz. Prices are the same as through the retailer directly, but as much as 37 percent of the purchase price is donated to the user's charity.
Similarly, with every search conducted on GoodSearch, one penny is donated to the user's charity. It's the same as other search engines, but pennies add up with each search. If 500 people search four times a day, those searches raise $600 in one month.
