Marsh & McLennan Companies Inc. announced the appointment today of Vanessa A. Wittman as chief financial officer and executive vice president.
The company said she will join MMC as an executive vice president on Sept. 10 and will assume her CFO duties by Oct. 15. She will succeed Matthew B. Bartley, who announced his plans to leave the company in June.
Ms. Wittman, 41, was most recently CFO and executive vice president of Adelphia Communications Corp., which she joined in 2003. At Adelphia, she served on a four-member executive team that oversaw the company's 2002 bankruptcy.
Adelphia was sold to Time Warner Cable and Comcast in 2006 and was dissolved in 2007 in what was termed one of the biggest bankruptcies in history. The demise of Adelphia also saw the conviction of founder John J. Rigas and his son, Timothy Rigas, for conspiracy of securities fraud in 2004.
During her time with Adelphia, Ms. Wittman oversaw a staff of more than 400 and was responsible for accounting, tax and internal audit functions; operational and field finance; corporate development; and the bankruptcy and investor relations teams.
Prior to Adelphia, Ms. Wittman served as CFO of 360networks, based in Seattle. She has held positions with Microsoft, Metricom Inc. and Morgan Stanley.
She will report directly to MMC President and Chief Executive Officer Brian Duperreault.
“Vanessa is an experienced finance professional with a successful track record at large, multifaceted organizations,” Mr. Duperreault said. “I, and the rest of the senior management team, look forward to working closely with her to maintain MMC's solid financial standing and to further enhance shareholder value.”
New York-based services company MMC is the parent company of insurance broker Marsh and reinsurance broker Guy Carpenter.
