Only 17 percent of Americans have a flood insurance policy, according to a Insurance Information Institute (I.I.I.) survey. Record widespread flooding across the Midwest has highlighted the catastrophic damages flooding can cause. This is relatively unchanged from a year ago; 14 percent of Americans said they had flood insurance.

The I.I.I. survey also found that:

o In the Northeast, the proportion of homeowners with flood insurance rose from 10 percent in 2007 to 20 percent in 2008.o In the Western region, 15 percent said they have flood insurance in 2008, up from 13 percent in 2007.o 17 percent of homeowners in the South have flood insurance compared with 20 percent a year ago.
