Only 17 percent of Americans have a flood insurance policy, according to a Insurance Information Institute (I.I.I.) survey. Record widespread flooding across the Midwest has highlighted the catastrophic damages flooding can cause. This is relatively unchanged from a year ago; 14 percent of Americans said they had flood insurance.

The I.I.I. survey also found that:

o In the Northeast, the proportion of homeowners with flood insurance rose from 10 percent in 2007 to 20 percent in 2008.
o In the Western region, 15 percent said they have flood insurance in 2008, up from 13 percent in 2007.
o 17 percent of homeowners in the South have flood insurance compared with 20 percent a year ago.
