Anyone who stumbled into a crowded 8:30 a.m. session of the Professional Liability Underwriting Society International Conference last November could have easily mistaken the meeting of underwriters and brokers for a dermatologists' convention.
During the session about insurance for the expanding medi-spa niche, Nancy Huddlestun, assistant vice president and senior underwriter for General Star Management Company in Chicago, gave the following descriptions of aesthetic/cosmetic procedures carriers might be asked to insure:
o Botox–an injection that relaxes and stops muscles from moving in an effort to minimize fine lines on the face.
o Dermal fillers–applied by injection to fill in the holes of the skin with substances like collagen, one of the treatments used to create a full-lipped look.
o Laser hair removal–the use of a laser to kill hair follicles.
o Intense pulled light treatments–for uneven skin pigmentation.
o Fraxel laser treatments–creating holes underneath a surface skin layer, which are filled with collagen to create healthy looking skin.
o Laser lift–a combination of thermage (heating and cooling of the skin), followed by Botox or dermal fillers.
o Chemical peels–removing a layer of skin.
o Microdermabrasion–mechanical exfoliation.
o Velasmooth–a cellulite treatment using light and radio frequency waves to move muscles around and remove fat.
o Mesotherapy–a cellulite treatment using an injection under the skin (into the mesoderm) to dissolve fat follicles.
o Smart Lipo–a cellulite treatment in which a laser strikes the fat cell, ruptures it, and then drains the fat through an incision.
o Contour Threadlifts–using sutures to do what is sometimes referred to as a “lunchtime facelift.”
