Mayfield Village, Ohio-based Progressive said for every policyholder that elects to deal with the insurer without the use of paper forms, it will "honor" them by planting a tree.
The firm said it will also offer a discount to customers that deal with it electronically.
Progressive said the program intends to plant more than a quarter of a million trees in U.S. National Forests countrywide.
It said customers can choose to enroll in the company's Paperless Policy option and opt to receive just bills, or bills and policy documents, electronically. If they do, Progressive will plant a tree in their honor.
Most of the trees, the auto insurer said, will be planted later this year--with the help of the Arbor Day Foundation--in U.S. National Forests damaged by wildfires, insects or disease.
"This program is a win-win for everyone. Trees are saved and forests restored, and customers eliminate clutter, have increased security, and get faster delivery of important documents," said Christine Johnson, Progressive's customer experience manager.
At the same time, she said her company can "reduce costs by conserving resources used to print and ship bills and other policy documents--while also doing our part to help the environment and improve the customer experience."
The Paperless Policy option is available to all Progressive private passenger auto customers--whether they bought directly from the company or through one of the more than 30,000 independent insurance agencies that represent it.
Progressive said the paperless discount is currently available in Colorado and more states will be added throughout the rest of the year.
Customers who buy from an independent agent will receive a 5 percent discount; those who buy from Progressive directly will receive, on average, a 3 percent discount.
The Arbor Day Foundation, which is doing the planting, is a nonprofit conservation and education organization of nearly one million members, with a mission to inspire people to plant, nurture and celebrate trees. Information on the foundation is online at arborday.org.
