Black and red have been the traditional colors of business when referring to profitability, but green is edging its way into the business vocabulary, as well. Highmark, a Pennsylvania health insurer, recently was honored for its work in energy conservation and environmental design, and Mark Wood, director of Highmark's data center, finds the effort has become contagious in the company. "I'm not sure you ever stop being green once you start," he says. "It's an evolution."
As the world observes Earth Day 2008 on April 22, Highmark can take pride in what it is doing to save the planet.
The carrier has had recycling programs throughout the years, according to Wood. Building the company's data center in the fall of 2005, though, was its first real step into what is known as a LEED space project.
