I led three daily newspaper reporters covering insurance full-time into the lion's den in Boston last month, moderating a panel about the industry's poor image during the Property Casualty Insurers Association of America's annual conference.

The panel was a focus group for this reputationally challenged industry, only instead of the sponsors comfortably separated from critics by a one-way mirror, the two were face to face.

I give a lot of credit to the journalists for flying up to deliver in person their frank assessments of the industry's shortcomings. But I also credit PCI for having the guts to convene the panel. The first step in solving a problem is admitting you have one.
