California Insurance Fraud Commissioner Steve Poizner recently announced the extradition of Norman Hugh Baker, a Torrance, California fugitive who fled the state after cheating homeowners out of their insurance claims.

According to the California Department of Insurance, Baker failed to appear in court for a sentencing hearing in June 2007 for felony grand theft charges. An investigation led officials to Baker in Lawrenceville, Georgia and transported him back to California earlier this month.

Investigators also discovered that Baker posed as a licensed public adjuster and bilked eight homeowners out of almost $100,000, convincing homeowners that he would help them with claim recoveries for rain damage. A release by the CDI reports that he obtained settlement checks from insurance claims issued to him and the homeowners. After receiving the checks, homeowners were instructed to endorse them to Baker, who said he would use the funds for property repairs.
