A Florida man is suing a county jail because the medical care he received was alleged to be so poor that he ultimately pleaded no contest to a crime he said he did not commit–just so he could be released and seek private care.
In fact, what jail medical staff insisted was just gas pains turned out to be diverticulitis–an intestinal inflammation that was so severe, the man underwent several surgeries and lost 30 pounds after being released from jail.
In another instance, a mentally ill man in a South Carolina jail committed suicide after going without his court-ordered medications for 10 days. The coroner blamed medical neglect on the part of the jail staff. The judge noted that it was not the first time the coroner's orders for medical treatment were ignored by the jail.
