Illinois Mutual, Peoria, Ill., will hold its third annual Disability Insurance Awareness Month (DIAM) during May. This year, the LIFE Foundation has taken the event industry-wide, so Illinois Mutual will be joined by many other insurance companies across the country in raising awareness about the need for disability insurance.

"Disability Insurance Awareness Month is a great way to promote awareness about the importance of disability insurance to consumers and agents. Many Americans protect their cars, homes and health with insurance policies, but they fail to protect their most valuable asset--their paycheck," said Mike McCord, Chairman & President. "Our goal is to support our agents in educating consumers about how disability insurance can protect their families and prevent financial disasters."

Illinois Mutual's DIAM campaign will center around the thought-provoking question--"What if your last payday was your last payday?" As a part of this campaign, Illinois Mutual has recently redesigned its educational Web site, www.DIAwareness.com. This website was created to give consumers valuable information about disability insurance, including what it is, who needs it, why it is needed, how much is needed and where and when to get it. A short interactive DI assessment is also available to help consumers visualize the importance of disability insurance. Agents will be able to use this Web site to guide clients through making an informed decision about disability insurance.

For most Americans, the ability to earn an income is their most significant financial resource. However, very few choose to protect their incomes with disability insurance, mostly because many are not concerned about the possibility of becoming disabled. In fact, according to new survey results released by the Council for Disability Awareness (CDA), more than 80% of workers said they believe their chances of becoming disabled are far lower than actual statistics report. This is alarming, since Social Security Administration data shows the number of disabled workers in America has increased 35% since 2000. This may be partially due to the fact that, according to the JHA 2003/2004 Fact Book, deaths due to cancer, heart attack and stroke have gone down significantly in the last 20 years, but disabilities due to these same ailments are up dramatically. Due to medical technology, diseases that used to kill now disable. For this reason, disability insurance has become increasingly important over the past two decades and Americans need to be educated about their need for coverage.
