Heavy rainfall from tropical storms can result in property losses up to $1 billion and considerable fatalities from drowning or landslides. With that in mind, Tropical Storm Risk, a group of seasonal climate forecasting and risk management experts, has expanded its existing Tropical Storm Tracker software to offer quantitative and probabilistic rainfall forecasts for tropical storms. TSR is led by the Benfield Hazard Research Centre, a UK teaching and research institution.
According to a release by Tropical Storm Risk, the rainfall forecast innovation is intended to help insurers, reinsurers, and risk managers monitor threatening tropical storms, as well as assess risks associated with extreme amounts of rainfall and inland flooding. It offers updated forecasts every 12 hours and calculations of rainfall rates and totals for the previous three hours and last seven days.
