Claims News Service, Jan. 23, 12:19 p.m. EST- A release from the California Department of Insurance (CDOI) stated the new California Insurance Commissioner Steve Poizner has issued an emergency declaration to help bring out-of-state adjusters to the agricultural community's aid.

The announcement allows adjusters from across the country to help California accommodate for the overwhelming number of crop and pending insurance claims. California's crops have suffered greatly after recent sub-zero temperatures ruined much of the state's citrus, avocado, and strawberry crops. The CDOI estimates that there may be nearly $1 billion in damages to the state's agricultural products.

The widespread crop damage has resulted in a shortage of qualified insurance adjusters, according to the CDOI. "During this state of emergency, I want to ensure that our farming communities avoid the red tape and get paid quickly so they can get back to the business of farming," said Commissioner Poizner in the release.
