By any objective measure, the hurricane season of 2005 set records in the annals of pollution disasters, but the pollution caused by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita is not exclusive to those two storms. Any hurricane or windstorm can create environmental liability issues across a broad spectrum of businesses.
Whatever the type of business operation, it is vulnerable as the recipient–or cause–of pollution from a number of sources including:
o Discharge of untreated effluent into receiving waters from overwhelmed municipal wastewater treatment plants.
