With medical malpractice rates leveling off–albeit at much higher levels than in the past–so, too, have the number of new start-up medical malpractice insurers.

After two consecutive years of very strong growth in the number of start-up medical malpractice insurers across the country, 2005 saw a significant drop in the number of new start-ups, as shown in Table 1. While the rate of growth has slowed, the total number of medical malpractice insurers beginning operations since January 2002 stands at an impressive 105 companies.

Further, in addition to the 105 new start-up insurers, there also exist numerous other new medical malpractice programs that have been formed outside the cohort of companies identified by our screening process.
