Our federal government cannot come to grips with our biggest challenges–the war in Iraq, health care, Social Security, runaway budget deficits, energy independence and the preservation of our constitutional rights. So it should come as no surprise that Washington is failing miserably when confronted with the biggest liability crisis facing the nation–asbestos.

Asbestos manufacturers have been sued to the hilt and driven into bankruptcy. Insurers are liable for tens of billions. The courts take forever to sort out class-action suits, and deserving people are inevitably falling between the cracks.

This is a national problem that needs a federal solution, but our can't-do Congress is coming up short yet again.
