Two California women were arrested for auto insurance fraud and are being investigated for what is commonly referred to as an "owner give-up" scam to collect insurance money.
According to the California Department of Insurance, Amy Quist, 29, paid her friend, Jennifer Griffin, 27, to "steal" her 2001 Ford Mustang and then set it afire. Quist reported to local police that her car was stolen while it was parked in Elk Grove. Police soon found the car burning nearby. She then filed a claim with her auto insurance carrier.
The Sacramento County Urban Auto Insurance Fraud Task Force determined that Quist paid Griffin and another person to destroy the car, but when the third backed out, Quist and Griffin did the job themselves.
