Claims News Service, Dec. 12, 10:30 a.m. EST — Officials from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's National Weather Service have declared Hawaii as being compliant with the TsunamiReady and StormReady programs.

The distinction means the state has established a 24-hour warning and emergency operations center, can issue warnings and forecasts to alert the public in more than one way, has a system to monitor local weather conditions, promotes community readiness, and has developed a formal hazardous weather plan.

"All four counties in Hawaii have earned the TsunamiReady and StormReady designation, making Hawaii the first state in the United States to achieve this status," said David L. Johnson, director of NOAA's National Weather Service.
