A bill on its way to the Louisiana Senate floor has drawn theire of insurance groups such as the National Association of MutualInsurance Companies and the Property Casualty Insurers Associationof America. The two associations claim that House Bill 509 willunfairly penalize the state's safe drivers and will restrictinsurers from knowing whether their consumers have received ticketsfor certain violations.

The main provision of the bill reads: “The operating record ofan individual shall not include citations for violation of anystatute or ordinance requiring use of a seatbelt or wearing amotorcycle helmet.”

“Operators who ignore these safety precautions should be knownto insurers, and their unsafe behaviors should be reflected inhigher premiums,” said NAMIC's state affairs manager, DavidReddick. “This type of legislation ends up protecting them and notthe operators who use seatbelts and helmets.”
