Slips, trips, and falls by patrons and others are the mostprevalent claims experienced by full-service restaurants, accordingto Restaurant Insurance Corp., of Greenwood Village, Colo. Theanalysis of claims filed by the company's insured restaurants since2002 showed that each such claim resulted in $3,550 in claim costs.Almost 51 percent of workers' compensation claims were the resultof two causes: slips, trips, and falls and cuts or puncturewounds.

The second biggest cause of general liability claims was bitinginto or swallowing foreign substances, with 765 such claims out ofa total of 2,332. Among property claims, the most costly were forfire losses, accounting for $5.3 million. The most frequentlyoccurring losses were for equipment or electrical breakdown claims,while the second most prevalent claims were for wind, hail, orwater damage.
