The National Association of Mutual Insurance Companies said itsmember companies and their employees have donated $1.375 million tothe American Red Cross for Hurricane Katrina relief efforts.

"It is the principle upon which our industry was founded--thatis 'neighbor helping neighbor'--that exemplifies the spirit inwhich NAMIC members contributed to the relief effort," said ChuckChamness, president of NAMIC.

He said many companies matched employee contributions dollar fordollar, and one company matched $10 for every $1 donated to thefund.

Mr. Chamness related that one member insurer dispatched at leastthree 18-wheelers filled with items such as water, food, clothing,toys and medical supplies to areas in need, and one companyprovided gift-cards through a local church so evacuees couldpurchase basic necessities.
