Terrie E. Troxel, president and chief executive officer of the American Institute for CPCU and the Insurance Institute of America, announced that after seven years in his post he will resign on Monday.

The Malvern, Pa.-based group said the institutes' board will conduct a national search to find a successor for Mr. Troxel, and in the interim has named Peter L. Miller, the institutes' executive vice president, to serve in the post on an acting basis.

An insurance professional and educator, Mr. Troxel became the institutes' fourth president and CEO in June 1998.

During his tenure, the professional certification institutes said they had held nearly 600,000 examinations around the world, and the American Institute for CPCU conferred its Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter designation upon more than 12,000 insurance professionals in 35 countries.

The institutes said that achievements under his leadership included:

Development of computerized testing.

o Completion of a major restructuring of the CPCU curriculum.

o Revision of numerous Insurance Institute of America courses and programs.

o Creation of new educational design standards for institute study materials as well as launching SMART Study Aids.

Most recently, the organization founded the CPCU Institute of Greater China.

In announcing his resignation, Mr. Troxel thanked the organization's board, Development Fund contributors and professional staff.

"I am leaving with deep gratitude to my friends and colleagues here and with solid optimism regarding the organization's ability to continue fulfilling its mission to provide unrivaled educational opportunities to people involved in risk management and property-casualty insurance," he said.

The chairman of both institutes, John J. Degnan, the vice chairman and chief administrative officer of The Chubb Corp., expressed gratitude for Mr. Troxel's service and accomplishments.
