Ex-Prosecutor Beefs Up The Hartford's Compliance

NU Online News Service, Dec. 27, 3:17 p.m. EST?Ronald Apter, a former federal prosecutor, has joined The Hartford Financial Services Group Inc. in its compliance department as part of the company's long-term strategy to beef up its compliance team.[@@]

Company spokeswoman Sue Honeyman said Mr. Apter would be involved in a wide variety of compliance activities, primarily for The Hartford's property-casualty insurance business.

"We've been beefing up compliance for quite a while," Ms. Honeyman said. "We are certainly in a changing world here and we have decided to expand [the company's] compliance staff."

Mr. Apter is best known for successfully prosecuting Joseph Ganim, mayor of Bridgeport, the largest city in Connecticut, on corruption charges.

Mr. Apter is expected to start his new job as vice president and deputy associate counsel for compliance for the Hartford, Conn.-based carrier on Jan. 3.
