By Mark E. Ruquet
NU Online News Service, Sept. 29, 3:56 p.m. EDT?The earthquake, which rippled through central California yesterday appears to have caused little damage in the area, according to insurance representatives.
The trembler, which registered as a 6.0 magnitude on the open-ended Richter scale, was centered seven miles southeast of Parkfield, Calif. It struck at 10:15 a.m. PDT and appears to have done little damage to the area, which has less than 40 residents.
Pete Moraga, a spokesman for the Insurance Information Network of California, said the area was the site of a lot of U.S. Geological Survey equipment, and some residents, but there are no reports of extensive damage coming out of the area.
Stan Devereux, a spokesman for the California Earthquake Authority, which provides earthquake insurance to about two-thirds of the homes in the state, said the authority has not yet received claims related to the quake, but there could be some by the end of the week.
In a statement, CEA said it provides earthquake insurance to an estimated 17,000 policyholders within a 50 mile radius of the epicenter.
The quake was reportedly felt as far north as San Francisco and south of Los Angeles.
In a statement, the California Office of Emergency Services said there were no reports of significant damage or casualties from the earthquake. It noted that the U.S. Geological Survey estimates that there is a five to 10 percent chance of a comparable or larger quake occurring within the next seven days.
