Abraham Named APIW Woman Of Year

NU Online News Service, April 7, 10:33 a.m. EDT?Janice Abraham has been selected for this year's Association of Professional Insurance Women Woman of the Year Award, APIW said.[@@]

Ms. Abraham is president and chief executive officer of United Educators Insurance, a reciprocal risk retention group headquartered in Chevy Chase, Maryland. United Educators provides liability insurance and risk management services to educational institutions.

A cocktail reception and award ceremony will be held in her honor June 8 at the New York Marriott Marquis.

Mr. Harry L. Richter Jr., chairman and chief executive officer of Genesis Underwriting Management Company, a Berkshire Hathaway Company, will introduce Ms. Abraham at the event. Dr. Ellen Thrower, executive director of St. John's University School of Risk Management, will also offer remarks on Ms. Abraham's career and contributions.

Commenting on this award, Mr. Richter said: "Janice is an extraordinarily capable insurance leader and executive, and it is a privilege to offer our strongest recommendation of her for the APIW Insurance Woman of the Year in 2004."

He continued that Ms. Abraham has "consistently displayed a very high degree of professionalism and personal integrity?two qualities clearly imbedded and nurtured within the culture of UE. "

The annual APIW Insurance Woman of the Year Award, first presented in 1976, recognizes an exceptional woman who has achieved prominence in the insurance industry.

Maddy Lichtman, president of APIW, noted that Ms. Abraham's "leadership qualities and accomplishments, as well as her commitment to supporting and advancing women's careers in insurance, are exceptional examples of all of the qualities that the APIW looks for in the recipient of this highly prestigious honor.

Ms. Abraham joined United Educators Insurance in 1998 and has 18 years experience with the education community in various business positions.

She serves on the board of directors of the National Risk Retention Association and is committee chair of the Vermont Captive Insurance Association Legislative Committee. She is chair of the Waycrosse Investment Committee and is a member of the Consulting Editorial Board for the Association of Governing Boards of Universities and Colleges, the Dean's Advisory Council for American University's School of International Service, and the Whitman College Investment Committee, APIW said.
