Greenberg Calls Tort Lawyers ?Terrorists’
NU Online News Service, Feb. 25, 2:26 p.m. EST?American International Group Chairman Maurice Greenberg, continuing his campaign to reform class-action litigation, yesterday blasted lawyers opposed to tort reform as “terrorists,” according to an official with the group, sponsoring his talk.[@@]
Speaking at the Chief Executives’ Club of Boston, part of Boston College’s Carroll School of Management, Mr. Greenberg said also that combating tort-reform opponents is “like fighting the war on terrorists,” according to Tina Rice, assistant director at the club.
He condemned plaintiff lawyers’ practice of venue shopping. Defendants in such situations “get raped” by the process, she quoted him as saying.
“I call the plaintiff’s bar terrorists,” Mr. Greenberg said at the luncheon, according Ms. Rice.
Ms. Rice, who had a tape recording of Mr. Greenberg’s remarks, said that in discussing “venue shopping,” where plaintiffs’ lawyers seek out favorable jurisdictions to win massive awards from sympathetic juries and judges, he said, “You know you’re going to get raped…when you appear there,” adding, “Our legal tort system is out of control? It’s a blight on the country.”
Reuters news service gave a similar account of his remarks.
