NAMIC Numbers Say It's Biggest P-C Group

NU Online News Service, Jan. 16, 12:16 a.m. EST?The National Association of Mutual Insurance Companies said it added 14 new companies to its membership last year, boosting NAMIC's property-casualty insurers' total direct written premium to $170 billion..[@@]

The Indianapolis-based association said the membership totals more than 1,350 companies.

The new companies that the association added in 2003 are:

? FM Global and Mutual Boiler Re

? Co-operators General Insurance

? Federated Insurance

? FCCI Insurance Group

? Donegal Mutual

? Capital Insurance Group

? Wawanesa Mutual

? Workers Compensation Fund

? Austin Mutual

? Standard Mutual

? Meramec Valley Mutual

? Patrons Mutual of Lafayette County

? Farmers Mutual of Seward City

? Missouri Physicians Mutual

Charles M. Chamness, NAMIC's president, said the association has a 99 percent member retention rate.

The announcement comes a week after two major insurance company trade associations, the National Association of Independent Insurers and the Alliance of American Insurers, merged to form the Property Casualty Insurers Association of America, based in Des Plaines, Ill.

PCI represents more than 1,000 member companies, writing 37 percent of the p-c market amounting to $154 billion in premium.

NAMIC said its membership comprises 41 percent of the p-c market.
