Mr. Blanch, a University of Maryland graduate, founded his company in 1957. In 2000, Mr. Blanch, who was still chairman and chief executive officer, said his company was up for sale after a drop in revenues and charges it related to its involvement in the Unicover workers' compensation pool, which collapsed.

The following year, Mr. Blanch was succeeded as chief executive by Chris Walker, and was named chairman emeritus at the company prior to the sale to Benfield.

A spokesman for Benfield said the family had released no further information about Mr. Blanch other than a statement that the focus of his life was "integrity, and caring about and providing for his family friends and others."
