Could Darwin Sell Insurance?

Excess and surplus lines brokers, after struggling for years in a seemingly endless soft market, were buzzing with excitement at an industry gathering in Boston last week.

Who could blame them? With the market likely to remain hard for as far as the eye can see, their talents will be very much in demand. Indeed, a report by A.M. Best on the state of the E&S market noted that direct premium volume for surplus lines insurers soared nearly 35 percent in 2001, compared with a healthy but relatively anemic 11 percent by the overall property-casualty industry. The E&S market should do just as well this year.
