NU's 'Shields' Failed

To The Editor:

I agree 100 percent with Ara Trembly's “Technology Enabled”column in your April 15 edition (“In The High-Tech Battle ToProtect IT Systems, Our Shields Are Failing,” page 49). However, the problem I have is with the “Star Trek” photo accompanying thecolumn. It is incorrect given the scenario and caption used.

|

The picture shows the “Enterprise D,” which Capt. Kirk nevercommanded. In addition, during that timeline with the “EnterpriseD,” the Federation and the Klingons [which Mr. Trembly had facingoff in battle] were allies. His column's point [that firms arefailing to adequately upgrade their data security systems to fendoff hacker attacks] is well-taken, but the photo illustrating hisStar Trek analogy shows the wrong Enterprise.

I hate to be a stickler for facts, but whether in writtenform–or, in this case, photo form–accuracy counts.

Editor's Note: The photo that accompanied Mr.Trembly's column was as much a surprise to him as it was to you–hedid not see it before his editors put the column on the presses. Asa “Treker” myself, I should have paid more attention to thismatter. When we realized the mistake we'd made, we expected somesharp-eyed reader to call us out on this one, and you havecertainly done so with Spock-like precision. Live long andprosper!
