PIA Has Hurricane Season Advice
NU Online News Service, May 31, 2:38 p.m. EST?The National Association of Professional Insurance Agents, in advance of the Atlantic Hurricane season, that begins tomorrow, is offering homeowners tips on what to do before and after a storm.
Among some of the recommendations the Alexandria, Va.-based association makes is to make sure home and flood insurance is up to date. This should include coverage for replacement cost value. Renters should look into purchasing rental insurance.
Homeowners, PIA noted, should also make an inventory of possessions.
In the event of a hurricane, and after a claim is filed, homeowners should take pictures and secure their home from further damage, PIA said.
While waiting for the adjuster, policyholders may want to get a repair estimate or two to help the process along, the agents group advised.
Policyholders, PIA said, should retain all receipts during the claims period, including expenses for temporary dwelling. Expenses must be in line with normal living costs, PIA said.
Clients, PIA said, need to work through their agent or company during the claims process if they have questions about the status of their claim or the settlement.
Changes to a home or an increase in value could affect the insurance coverage. Policyholders should review their coverage with their agent to make sure it is up to date and they are not underinsured, the group said.
Some hurricane researchers forecast there will be 12 named storms during the hurricane season that runs from June 1 to Nov. 30. They estimate there is a 75 percent probability of one or more major hurricanes hitting somewhere along the East Coast. A total of seven hurricanes and three major hurricanes with top wind speeds exceeding 111 mph are forecast for this season.
