The Texas Department of Insurance published a press release announcing the launch of a transparency tool showing why home insurance companies decline, cancel, or nonrenew policies by ZIP code.

Consumers can enter their ZIP code and see the reasons insurers have declined, canceled, or nonrenewed a policy in their area. The tool also shows the reasons for the market as a whole.

Topping the list for declinations are the location of the risk and claims history. For nonrenewals, the top reasons are the insurer withdrawing from the market, at the insured's request, and "other, insurer's action," which can include a policyholder submitting a fraudulent claim, if TDI determined that the policy violates the law, or any other reason not listed. For cancellations, the top two reasons by a long shot are at the insured's request and failure to pay premiums when due.

TDI plans to update the page at least quarterly and plans to provide a similar page with auto insurance insights later this year.
