For homeowners, dwelling fire, and renters policies, the period for nonrenewal or cancellation is 60 days. The ten-day notice for nonpayment is unchanged. Added to § 41-2401 is a notice-content requirement: the 60-day nonrenewal notice and the 60-day cancellation notice must be accompanied by a statement of the reason for the cancellation or nonrenewal. The stated reason must identify the specific basis for the company's decision with enough details to inform the insured why the action is being taken. A general reference to general company or underwriting guidelines is not sufficient without more detail.
The revised notice period applies to policies issued or renewed with an effective date, issuance date, or renewal date on or after January 1, 2027. Insurers are required to file conforming forms with the department before January 1, 2027.
