Two attorneys have been convicted of mail fraud, wire fraud, and witness tampering in connection with staged auto accidents. The accidents involved cars full of passengers that deliberately struck trucks on the road in order to file insurance claims. Over time, 63 people were charged in the staged accidents. The implied losses to insurance companies and others for the staged accidents in some estimates are over $1 billion. One of the attorneys had attempted to persuade one witness to take a large sum of cash and go to the Caribbean.
