The Louisiana Department of Insurance published a news release providing guidance following the impact of Tropical Storm Arthur in the state.

The Department provided a document answering frequently asked questions. Insureds are advised that flood damage is typically not covered by their homeowners insurance but by a separate policy written through the NFIP or private flood insurance.

Insureds with an NFIP policy who are unable to locate their insurance agent can contact the NFIP at floodsmart.gov or call 800-621-3362. NFIP's residential building limit is $250,000, and $100,000 for contents. Non-residential building limits are $500,000 and $500,000 for contents.

When filing a claim, insureds should have their policy number and an initial assessment of the damage available. Insureds are advised to take photos of the damage before cleaning up and not to throw away damaged items. Insureds are expected to mitigate damage by making temporary repairs, such as putting a tarp over a leaking roof.

Vehicles damaged by the flood or water damage should be covered under an auto policy with comprehensive coverage. Insureds are warned to be aware of contractor fraud following the storm. Unlicensed individuals may pose as contractors or inspectors; insureds should ask a contractor to provide a license or identification.
