Fraud of the Week - It's All About the Commission

Personal Lines – Maryland

Amount - $100,000+

A man has been indicted on six counts including two counts of insurance fraud and three counts of identity fraud. The man used the identity of other insurance agents and customers, submitting multiple applications to insurers and representing that he had sold the policies that had been sold by other licensed agents. He told the customers that he would pay the premium and, in some cases, submitted applications without the applicant's knowledge or permission. Once the applications were approved, he took the commissions and transferred them to an account that only he controlled. He'd then stop paying the premiums and let the policies lapse for nonpayment.
