Fraud of the Week – When you Reinstate your Policy because you had a Loss

Homeowners Fraud – Kansas

Amount – Unknown

A man pleaded guilty to one misdemeanor count of insurance fraud and one count of attempted theft.  He was sentenced to 12 months probation for insurance fraud and ordered to pay a $500 fine and court costs. His sentence includes 30 days of underlying jail time for insurance fraud and six months of underlying jail time for attempted theft. The man tried to reinstate his insurance policy to file a claim for water damage. Once the policy was reinstated, he submitted a claim for water damage that had occurred before the policy was reinstated; when he submitted the claim, he stated the damage hadn't happened until after the policy was back in force.
