Fraud of the Week – So I Bent the Shingles a Little
Homeowners Fraud – North Carolina
Amount - $30,000
A project manager of a roofing company was arrested and charged with insurance fraud, attempting to obtain property by false pretense, and conspiracy. All three charges are felonies. The man conspired with a coworker to damage and bend the shingles on the roof of a dwelling and then claim that the damage was caused by wind and hail so he could obtain a $30,000 claim from the insurer. The fraud investigation involved a sting operation using a "bait house" to catch roofing company employees intentionally damaging the property to create work for themselves and substantiate a fraudulent insurance claim.
