The Michigan Department of Insurance and Financial Services (DFS) published a bulletin announcing the creation of the Auto Insurance Fire Loss Program, effective January 5, 2026.
The program requires that automobile insurers have its insureds submit a report for claims of $2,000 or greater due to fire or explosion loss to an insured motor vehicle.The report must be completed prior to payment of the claim, and on a form prescribed by the state fire marshal. The loss must also have occurred within a municipality participating in the fire loss program.
The participating municipalities are divided into two sections: Section3010(8)(a)covers municipalities in a county with a population of 425,000 or more, and Section 3010(8)(b)covers municipalities with a population of 50,000 or less and in a county with a population of less than 425,000.
