Fraud of the Week - Arson for Profit
Homeowners Fraud - Illinois
Amount - Unknown
A woman was sentenced to 15 years in federal prison for her role in organizing arsons and insurance fraud from 2014 to 2023. She was found guilty of all 15 counts of an indictment charging conspiracy to commit mail and wire fraud, conspiracy to commit arson, and use of fire to commit a federal felony. The woman took advantage of an intellectually disabled person and exploited his illiteracy in order to obtain property and insurance in his name. After directing a co-conspirator to burn a property, she sued the insurance company for more money under the name of the disabled person without his knowledge. The company settled and the woman kept the victim’s portion of the settlement. During the trial, jurors heard recordings of the woman planning arsons and directing others how to avoid cameras and cell phone tracking, and how to best set a fire that was hard to investigate. Fortunately, the ATF was able to prevent the burning of those properties.
