The Maine Bureau of Insurance published a bulletin asking insurers to provide accommodations to those affected by the government shutdown.
The shutdown has been in effect since October 1, 2025. Many Maine residents who are federal employees have not received a paycheck and may be facing financial difficulties as a result. Also affected are those whose employment relies on federal grants and contracts.
The Bureau asks that insurers provide a minimum of a 60-day grace period to affected workers to pay their premiums. Policies should not be cancelled for nonpayment of premium and late fee penalties should be assessed during this time. The grace period is not a forgiveness of the premium. The request is directed to all admitted and non-admitted insurers, including life, health, auto, property, casualty, and other types.
The bulletin can be found here.
